Triploid Grass Carp

Many aquatic weeds including hydrilla cause serious problems in water systems throughout Florida. Triploid Grass Carp are effective for the biological control of aquatic weeds, including Hydrilla. The fish, native to Asia, feed on aquatic plants.

Because they are non-indigenous to North America, the fish are bred sterile (that’s the “Triploid” part) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission restricts the sale, transportation, and possession of the fish in order to prevent the release of the fish in to natural habitats. A permit obtained from FWC is necessary for the use of Triploid Grass Carp. Click here for information from the FWC.

As a condition of the permit, the stocked waterbody needs to have a method of fish containment, such as the use of a barrier. Before issuance of the permit, FWC will inspect the barriers to determine acceptability. Once barriers are approved, the permit is issued and the waterbody can be stocked with Triploid Grass Carp.

Carp Containment Barriers

After many years of fabricating, repairing, and installing carp containment barriers, we have found welded aluminum construction to be the superior method. Our welded aluminum carp containment barriers are the far superior method. If your pond contractor uses PVC, or really anything else… Don’t! PVC becomes brittle when exposed to UV/sunlight and will fail. Quickly. Other methods, such as rebar, rust and degrade over time as well.

Aluminum is the far superior material for construction and the benefits of using aluminum are:

  • Strength,
  • Does not rust or require repainting,
  • Lighter and easier to remove in a flood emergency,
  • Smoother than other materials (rebar) and does not collect as many debris,
  • Breaks less due to welded construction,
  • Lower maintenance and repair of barriers,
  • Lower failure rate.

Quality carp containment barriers are integral to a successful stocking program. Florida Waterways’ industry leading fabrication methods and materials will help to secure your investment in Triploid Grass Carp and contribute to the success of an integrated management approach.

    Recommended Shoreline Plants

    “What should I plant ?”

Aquascaping a shoreline with native plants can improve  water quality by absorbing runoff nutrients. The plants can also reduce erosion, provide habitat, and be aesthetically pleasing.
