Wetland Plantings & Mitigation
Wetland Mitigation is the restoration, enhancement, or simply preservation of wetlands, creeks, streams and other aquatic areas to avoid adverse impacts that remain after all possible and practicable measures have been taken to protect the wetland area.
Often times, this will include the installation of native plant communities. Problem is, the numerous invasive plant species present in Florida find their way into your mitigation plantings. The non-native invasive just simply out compete the native plants for resources. and, over time, mitigation plantings will shift to mono-cultures of invasive plants such as torpedo grass and alligator weed. The native plants will all but die, unable to compete with their new competition. This damages Florida’s unique ecosystem which supports a wide and diverse variety of wildlife, many which can only be found in Florida.

Proper mitigation maintenance requires an extensive background in wetland plant identification and proper consideration of environmental factors to balance these sensitive ecosystems. The Florida Waterways staff is properly licensed in natural areas weed management and led by a University of Florida Certified Florida Master Naturalist to ensure the success of your mitigation project.
“What should I plant ?”
Aquascaping a shoreline with native plants can improve water quality by absorbing runoff nutrients. The plants can also reduce erosion, provide habitat, and be aesthetically pleasing.
